Siamese cats have been depicted in art for longer than almost any other domestic cat breed. The Cat Book Poems — a manuscript from the ancient Kingdom of Siam, now Thailand — shows cats that are clearly Siamese ancestors, painted with the same pointed pattern and blue eyes that define the breed today. For centuries these cats were kept exclusively in royal households and Buddhist temples. The portrait tradition for this breed is, in other words, extremely old, and a contemporary Siamese portrait is the continuation of something that began hundreds of years before Western portrait painting reached its height.

Coat colours and how they render

Siamese cats come in four classic point colours: seal, chocolate, blue and lilac. All have the pointed pattern — darker colour on the face mask, ears, legs and tail against a pale body — and all have the vivid blue eyes that are the breed's most immediately striking feature.

Seal point Siamese — the darkest and most classic colour — produce the strongest portrait results in formal styles. The deep brown-black points against a cream or pale fawn body create a clear tonal structure, and the vivid blue eyes provide a focal point of intense colour contrast. In oil painting the seal points take on a rich dark warmth and the cream body catches the amber tones of the painting tradition.

Blue point Siamese have a cooler, softer palette — slate grey points against a white or cool white body. Watercolour handles this palette with real elegance, the cool washes of the medium complementing the cool tones of the coat.

Chocolate and lilac points — the warmer and softest variants respectively — suit oil painting and pastel. Lilac points in watercolour produce some of the most delicate cat portrait results in the catalogue.

    Recommended styles for Siamese

Oil Painting — the formal tradition suits a breed with royal and temple heritage. Watercolour — particularly beautiful for blue and lilac point Siamese. Renaissance — the ancient royal history of the breed makes the formal portrait tradition an obvious fit. Ancient Egyptian Portrait — while technically Thai rather than Egyptian, the ancient temple heritage of the breed suits the style's ancient sacred associations. Pastel — the softest and most delicate choice, particularly suited to lilac and blue points.

    Photo tips

The blue eyes are the priority in a Siamese portrait and must be clearly visible, in sharp focus and well lit in the source photo. The vivid blue of the Siamese eye is extremely sensitive to light direction — natural front-facing light produces the truest blue. The pointed pattern should be clearly defined — a photo that shows the contrast between the pale body and the darker mask and points gives the portrait its essential visual structure. The elegant, long body of the Siamese is worth including if possible.

Getting the best photo for your portrait

    • Face fills most of the frame — the closer the better
    • Eyes are sharp and clearly visible — this is the most important element
    • Natural light — near a window or outdoors works best
    • No flash — flash creates harsh shadows and red-eye
    • Front-facing or slight angle — avoid pure side profiles
    • Your pet is awake and alert — sleepy or blinking photos lose the expression
    • Phone photos are absolutely fine — no professional camera needed
    • If in doubt, try it — the preview is free and takes 90 seconds
