The Basenji is one of the oldest dog breeds in the world and one of the most unusual. It does not bark — it produces a sound closer to a yodel — and it grooms itself like a cat. Images resembling Basenjis appear in ancient Egyptian art and in cave paintings from Libya dating back six thousand years. The breed's appearance reflects its ancient origins: the tightly curled tail, the wrinkled forehead, the upright ears and the expression of alert, intelligent curiosity produce a face of unusual character. Portrait art finds the Basenji a compelling subject precisely because the combination of features is so specific and so distinctive.

Coat colours and how they render

Basenjis come in several colour combinations: red and white, black and white, black tan and white, and brindle and white. All have white on the chest, feet and tail tip, and all have the characteristic tightly curled tail and wrinkled forehead.

Red and white Basenjis — the most common colour — produce oil painting results of warm, immediate character. The vivid red against crisp white creates a portrait with strong tonal contrast and warmth. The wrinkled forehead is a defining feature that the directional light of oil painting picks out with real clarity.

Black and white Basenjis produce the most graphic results. The bold black patches against white create strong compositional structures in pop art and formal styles.

Tricolour Basenjis — black, tan and white — have the three-tone structure that oil painting and renaissance handle with natural depth. The tan markings on the face and legs add warmth between the black and white.

Brindle and white Basenjis have the striped pattern within the brindle patches — a subtle combination that oil painting renders with tonal interest.

    Recommended styles for Basenjis

Oil Painting — the warmest and most characterful choice for red and tricolour Basenjis. Ancient Egyptian Portrait — a breed depicted in ancient Egyptian art suits this style with genuine historical authenticity. Pop Art — the bold colour patches and the distinctive face produce graphic results. Renaissance — the ancient heritage of the breed suits the formal portrait tradition. Ink Wash Portrait — the clean, precise lines of the breed and the style's clean aesthetic are a natural pairing.

    Photo tips

The wrinkled forehead is a defining portrait feature of the Basenji and should be clearly visible in the source photo — a photo taken at eye level with the dog alert and looking forward shows the characteristic forehead wrinkles. The tightly curled tail is another defining feature worth including if possible — a full-body photo that shows both the face and the tail silhouette captures both. Natural front-facing light picks out the forehead wrinkles most clearly. The upright ears should both be visible and forward-facing.

Getting the best photo for your portrait

    • Face fills most of the frame — the closer the better
    • Eyes are sharp and clearly visible — this is the most important element
    • Natural light — near a window or outdoors works best
    • No flash — flash creates harsh shadows and red-eye
    • Front-facing or slight angle — avoid pure side profiles
    • Your pet is awake and alert — sleepy or blinking photos lose the expression
    • Phone photos are absolutely fine — no professional camera needed
    • If in doubt, try it — the preview is free and takes 90 seconds
